The boom in the gig economy

The gig economy continues to expand and evolve every day; and the world at large is changing in ways that will make gig work even easier for everyone. Gig companies are constantly striving to offer even more opportunities for gig workers, freelancers and businesses. Therefore, it is important to remain as dynamic as ever to keep up with this fast-paced industry.

Here are some tips on how to do it:

Earn money through more gig work

Gig work provides greater access to the workforce for members from all walks of life; so whatever the distribution, size and composition of the population (the demographic part), there will always be something for everyone.

The key is to use all your skills and remember that they are of value. You can take on extra work as a waitress or chauffeur. If you have a passion for graphic design or editing, there is an abundance of online jobs you can choose from. Be as multifaceted as possible.

Get training - develop your skills

To ensure you keep getting jobs, you need to keep learning and growing. This could mean increasing your knowledge in your current area of expertise, or taking courses to become certified for a completely new role. The advantage is that the more competent you are, the easier it will be to find work that best suits you. You can read more about different ways to train and develop yourself on our blog.

Save money for a rainy day

We never know when life will throw something unexpected our way, but the best we can do is make sure we are as prepared as possible when/if that day comes. If nothing else, this is what we can learn from the current pandemic.

Stay informed

As a gig worker, you are not employed by your gig platform. Instead, you are the one who hires the company to get in touch with companies seeking labor and handle your administration. Thus, there may be some gray areas that are still clearing up in the industry.

Always make sure you are up to date with your tax and work environment rules.
If you have any questions, speak up - ask your platform company, your manager at the employer or visit the Swedish work environment authority Arbetsmiljöverket at www.av.se/en/. Remember that you are equally responsible for your own safety.

As mentioned in our recent whitepaper and during one of our Gigger Talks, with Glen Hodson from Free Trade Europe, the gig economy will continue to grow and thrive in the coming years, luckily you can too. Part of this means being consistent and taking responsibility for your own personal development as a gigger.
